A Bit of Unselfish Sewing

The February Stash Busting Theme has to do with love. One of the options is to make something for someone you love. I finally got around to making a couple of things for my mother-in-law, Lucia. I’ve wanted to do this for her for a really long time. I don’t have pictures of her modeling, just pictures of what I made. They’re shown on my dress form which isn’t quite her size but this is better than showing them on a hanger.

Firstly, a mash up of the Cake Hummingbird Top and the skirt from the Tiramisu dress. I had made a (unblogged) Hummingbird top for her a few months ago, so I knew the Hummingbird top should fit. She had a piece of fabric she really wanted to have something made out of, so I made her this dress.

The fabric she had was ever-so-slightly sheer when stretched, so I underlined it in a navy matte jersey. It makes the dress fairly sturdy and a bit heavy. I put clear elastic in the waistline to stabilize it from all the weight of the skirt. The neck and sleeve bands are just the fashion fabric.  I cut the underlining a little bit shorter than the skirt and then hemmed the skirt with a twin needle.

I also made her a skirt, inspired by my own flannel grunge skirt. She’s been wanting longer-length warm winter skirts, so this seemed like the right time of year to get this made for her.

I used the By Hand London circle skirt app (which is awesome by the way) to make a 1/4 circle skirt. The even check lines up well along the one seam, though the front is bias and the back is not, which bothers me on some level.

I bought more lace from Tresors De Luxe. The stuff on my own flannel skirt washes up beautifully, no ironing required, so I hope this does the same for my mother-in-law.

Love watching your stats as you count down your projects and up your fabric used. 🙂
I LOVE that pink skirt with the lace at the bottom! It’s so fun!

I love the pink and black skirt! I have to say that I’m quite flattered too. 😉 I also love the dress you made, so very nice of you to do some unselfish sewing.
